About Us

The Sobon Family

Our Family Legacy

Since the 1970s, our family has been dedicated to high-quality, award-winning winemaking, sustainable viticulture practices, and affordable prices.

Sobon Wine Company is a family-owned and operated business nestled in the Sierra Foothills of California. The journey began with Leon Sobon, a research chemist and passionate organic gardener, turned his love for winemaking into a full-time pursuit. With the support of his wife, Shirley, they moved their family up to Plymouth, CA and started the family business. Today, our estates span 290 acres, producing 4,000 tons of grapes annually. With numerous awards to our name, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone can enjoy sustainable, exceptional wines without compromising on taste or price.

Founders and Owners

Leon & Shirley Sobon

Leon, a research chemist from Los Altos, California, discovered his passion for winemaking through organic gardening and garage sessions with friends. This talent led him and his wife, Shirley, to move to Amador County in 1977, where they purchased an old ranch and planted their first vineyards. Their family business has since expanded to 200 acres. Shirley, an art enthusiast, also created a gallery within the winery to showcase local artists. Today, their award-winning wines reflect their dedication and vision for quality winemaking.

Executive Winemaker and Owner

Paul Sobon

Paul grew up assisting his parents, Leon and Shirley, with harvests in Amador County. After completing his education in 1982, he traveled to Europe to learn traditional winemaking techniques and spent a year in Australia honing his skills in Syrah. Returning to Shenandoah Vineyards in 1983, Paul began working full-time with his parents and now serves as the Executive Winemaker, playing a vital role in the winery’s future and success.

LLC Manager and Owner

Robert Sobon

Robert, the youngest of Leon and Shirley’s six children, is the LLC Business Manager for Sobon Wine Company. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Chico State University, he joined the family business in 1983, working alongside his brother Paul. While Paul focuses on winemaking, Robert manages business operations, including order processing, distributor relations, and tasting room oversight. His efforts ensure the winery runs smoothly, allowing the family to concentrate on their craft and expand their legacy.
